Objectives:
Changes within the current health care market are rapid, sudden, and sometimes unwanted and confusing. These changes can dramatically effect roles, expectations and responsibilities of the clinician, the supplier and the manufacturer. It is essential each of these entities has a clear understanding of today’s challenges and the ability to develop a working strategy ensuring the attainment of targeted goals. This session describes and discusses possible strategies concerning two common goals:
1. The ability to prescribe and obtain appropriate and affordable assistive technology enhancing the end-user’s functional abilities and quality of life; and
2. Fair and timely compensation.
Most, if not all of the professionals attending the International Seating Symposium have the common challenge of acquiring funding for assistive technology. Over the past few years, in the United States, there has been a funding paradigm shift for many people requiring assistive technology. Traditionally, many consumers received health insurance from state funded and operated Medicaid Programs. Many consumers are now being moved into the federal Medicare program and/or mandated managed care plans. This shift has resulted in an environment of confusion, less than appropriate equipment provision, and a virtual avalanche of paperwork. This presentation will attempt to clarify the complexities of this situation, identify the evolving roles and responsibilities of the individuals involved and provide real world examples of successful outcomes.
