Research Question 4

Citation Furumasu, J., Guerette, P., & Tefft, D. (2004). Relevance of the pediatric powered wheelchair screening test for children with cerebral palsy, Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology, 46, 468-474.
Question Does the Pediatric Powered Mobility Screening Test (PPWST), symbolic representational level (SRS) or coping factors predict driving ability for children with CP?
Description In this study 26 children with CP, aged between 2 and 6 years old were given 6 training sessions in a power chair. Approximately half way through these sessions a number of readiness tests were administered and results were analyzed to see if the tests predicted which children would drive successfully.
Results • PPWST was predictive of driving ability only for those children who could use a joystick • SRS marginally increased predictive ability for these same children
Messages • PPWST should not be used exclusively to determine which children have the potential to use a power wheelchair • PPWST is not appropriate for children with more severe forms of CP
