Question What is the impact of early power mobility use on language, play and social skills?
Description This study involved 23 children with both physical disabilities and CP. The children with orthopaedic disabilities were aged 18 and 42 months and the children with CP were aged between 18 and 72 months. They were assessed on social, play and communication skills at the time of power chair assessment, again when the power chair was delivered (approximately 4 months later) and a third time after they had been using the power chair for 4 months.
Results • Significant improvement in social skills
• Increased amount of physical play and significantly improved quality of play
• No change in language or cognitive development
Messages • Power mobility experience can enhance social and play skills
